5 facts you should know about laser hair removal

You’ll need multiple sessions

First and foremost, one of the most common misconceptions is that laser hair removal is a one-time treatment. In fact, it may take between six to eight treatments to see the full effects of the Diolaze XL laser hair removal procedure because the hair follicle must be completely removed. All laser hair removal requires this series of treatments that target hair follicles when they are in various stages of growth. Your LUXE Medical Spa and Laser technician will work with you to find the right time for your appointment, ideally when your hair follicle is in its mature stage. With each treatment, you will see a reduction in overall hair growth and thickness. The number of sessions you will require will depend on your hair colour, body area, skin tone, hair type, and a multitude of other factors. We encourage our clients to be prepared for multiple sessions and to work with their laser technicians to assess the results as they go. 

You are required to come to each session fully shaved

For the appointment, we asked that patients shave the area that they are looking to have lasered. Contrary to traditional hair removal procedures, such as waxing, it is important that the hair is entirely removed so that our technicians can identify the hair follicle and specifically target unwanted hair with the Diolaze XL laser. Hair should not be plucked, dyed, or waxed prior to a laser hair treatment appointment as it is important for the laser to be able to heat up and destroy the entire hair follicle. By removing the hair from the root, you are eliminating the follicle that the laser is looking to destroy. 

Laser hair removal cannot be done on areas with tattoos or significant scarring and prior to your appointment, the treatment areas should be entirely free from makeup, lotion, sunscreens, deodorants, and any sort of topical skin treatment. We also highly recommend that patients avoid exercise and hot showers immediately following their appointment as the increase in body temperature can lead to irritation. 

It doesn’t hurt!

Laser hair removal in its’ earliest form had a bad reputation for being uncomfortable and often even painful. It is important to note that laser hair removal cannot be used around the eyes. 

Laser hair removal isn’t the best option for everyone

Laser hair removal works on a variety of different skin types, hair colours, and hair types; however, there are a number of conditions that should not be combined with laser hair removal.  Individuals with a history of skin cancer, compromised immune systems, skin irritations, and known photosensitivity should not use laser hair removal. In addition, laser hair removal is not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing, or who have experienced laser reactions in the past. Prior to any laser treatment, your LUXE Medical Spa and Laser technician will discuss the safety and health recommendations to ensure laser hair removal is the right option for you.
